Director-at-Large (Volunteer Position)
Position Description:You will sit as one of ten directors on our volunteer Board of Directors. The Board is responsible for the creation and implementation of the strategic plan to ensure continuity in NHA’s goals and activities. You will have the opportunity to provide valued input into the association’s overall vision and will contribute to the continued well-being and sustainability of this respected and established not-for-profit organization. We encourage applicants who are interested in a term on the executive in the future: president, vice-president, treasurer, or secretary.
Mission:Norfolk Housing Association (NHA) provides quality and affordable housing in a mixed-model rent format, to those in need within the Calgary area, and facilitates the provision of affordable housing by partnering with other organizations.
About Us:NHA is a not-for-profit organization incorporated under the Alberta Societies Act. We own and operate five residential buildings in the Hillhurst/Sunnyside area with a total of 114 residential and 4 commercial tenants. We employ three full time staff and a part-time administrative assistant, and provide general and strategic direction to the Executive Director of the organization. While we are not a registered charity, we do receive some support from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and self-fund operations through the use of a mixed-model approach. This means that half our tenants pay “near-market” rent, and the other half are subsidized tenants who qualify for affordable housing on the basis of their annual income. We are also exploring opportunities for fundraising including casinos, bingos and silent auctions.
The NHA board of directors consists entirely of volunteers and reflects a diverse range of skills. The board meets monthly on a weeknight in the downtown core for up to two hours, and board members are also expected to attend 3 annual organization events. Annual events are typically organized for our tenants and include a Christmas Party, a Stampede Breakfast, and the Annual General Meeting. Board members are also expected to devote some time outside of the monthly meeting to further the board’s mandate of providing policy and direction to the Executive Director. The duration of this position is a maximum of two – three year terms.
Required Skills: Interpersonal communication, working as part of a team, providing direction and vision, a basic understanding of issues related to affordable housing in Calgary, willingness to learn about our organization and the issues that affect it.
Applicable Interests: Affordable housing, policy development, non-charitable fundraising.
Interested Candidates:Interested and qualified individuals can send a letter of interest, specific qualifications, as well as current resume to info@norfolkhousing.ca. Please note that we appreciate your interest but are unable to contact all applicants individually. No phone calls please.
